There is widespread concern that the current economic system is putting humanity on the brink of ecological breakdown. Calls to act on climate change therefore increasingly demand the transition to a more sustainable and just economic system. But what does such an alternative economic system look like - and how do we make it happen?

Join us for a film screening of the documentary “Outgrow the System” and discussion to explore fresh thinking on alternative economic models. The one-hour documentary, crafted by a Swedish collective of filmmakers, sheds light on economic strategies that steward our planet's limited resources, aiming to safeguard the survival of humans and other species.

The event is co-organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Washington, DC and Extinction Rebellion Washington, D.C. (www.xrdc.org). Founded in the UK in 2018, Extinction Rebellion is a global non-partisan movement using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the climate and ecological emergency. The Heinrich Böll Foundation is a non-profit organization that is part of the global green movement.

This Earth Day marks the two-year anniversary of XRDC’s campaign to get toxic, explosive, planet-heating methane gas out of our city for good. With efforts from many coalition partners, we are making real progress - but there’s no time to lose. Everything we love is on the line. On April 22nd, join us as we call our leaders here in DC to account and invite them to join us in building a future that is healthy and livable for everyone!

This action will be creative, disruptive, and fun - and together we will remind our leaders of their role in creating the beautiful future we know is possible. Once you’ve signed up, we’ll be in touch to help you plug into an action role and make sure you have what you need to participate. In the meantime, you can start thinking of a costume - everyone is invited to come dressed in red carpet attire and/or dressed as an animal/plant/etc. (optional but encouraged)!

Join Extinction Rebellion DC for a training in non-violent direct action!

This is a 3-hour, hands-on training to practice the skills needed to carry out effective actions. As traditional methods have failed to change the system, we must turn to NVDA and use our collective power to stop business as usual and create a better future for all! Whether you are new to the movement or just looking to brush up on your skills, now is the time to get involved!

We will be meeting at George Washington University (exact location TBA), alongside student activists from ORCA, at 1 PM on March 3rd. Please contact us with any questions or concerns.

Join us for a fun, community-building event to share activist art skills, a potluck, and warehouse cleanup from 10-4 on Sunday, Dec. 3rd!

Our Art Warehouse space is in serious need of a cleanup, given that we are most likely moving out of the space in the coming months. But we will first take the opportunity to offer an art skillshare workshop in the morning. Learn about Extinction Rebellion's art aesthetic and invaluable activist art skills such as painting, banner-making, and wheatpasting. We will follow that with a break for a potluck lunch (let us know what you plan to bring), and then spend the afternoon cleaning and organizing our space.

Come for all or part of the day:

Please wear protective shoes and bring work gloves and dust masks if you have them. Also, let us know in the form if you have access to a pickup truck and/or a desire to help with runs to the dump/recycling center!

Join XRDC on December 2nd at the Wharf for some holiday cheer as we tell Washington DC NO MORE PROJECT PIPES!

As many of you already know, XRDC has been campaigning to get City Council to put a stop to Washington Gas’ PROJECTpipes. This project would lock DC into decade more gas dependence when we should be working towards sustainable energy!

Washington Gas is sponsoring the District’s Holiday Boat Parade in an attempt to portray themselves as a charitable, family friendly company. We are calling their bluff! If they cared about families, they would prioritize the health and safety of DC citizens. Instead, they are trying to force dangerous methane gas into the homes of DC residents for decades to come while squeezing as much money out of the ratepayers as possible. We intend on making a splash at this event to get our message across—End methane, electrify DC! Stop PROJECTpipes!

We will be caroling throughout the area with fun, climate related song lyrics. There will also be many different activities that we can subvert, including holiday Karaoke where we can continue our climate caroling, ornament decorating where we can make rebellious art, and family photos with Santa where we can tell Santa what we really want for Christmas is a livable future!

Did you know there's a pipeline fight happening in YOUR backyard!?

Washington Gas wants to make ratepayers invest over $4.5 billion into rebuilding their methane gas infrastructure in DC — even though we KNOW that methane is making our kids sick, polluting our air, and contaminating our green spaces.

Join us and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network for some free beer and pizza and learn what we're are doing to STOP this pipeline project, and how you can join the fight against this madness!

NOTE: Please indicate when RSVPing if you have any food allergies or food intolerances so that we can plan accordingly.

This is a critical year for our climate and our community, and we're turning up the heat (electrically!). This fall, XRDC will be taking direct, disruptive, and beautiful action to call out our leaders right here in DC for their failure to protect us from fossil fuel infrastructure that's killing our future. Now is the time to get involved!

To do this, we will need courage. We will need love and sacrifice. We will need skills and community. Join us for an in-person, hands-on training to learn skills to carry out effective actions. While open to all, this training will include some advanced skills, so it's suggested that participants have some basic NVDA knowledge/experience. In addition, part of this training will be outside, so dress accordingly.

Why methane?
Our lives are desperately dependent on fossil fuels. That’s how the system works. That’s how the system was built. And that’s how the system fails us.

Everyone knows about the dangers of CO2. But there is another greenhouse gas that is 80x more powerful at warming the planet than CO2, releases noxious air pollution into our homes, and can even explode. We're talking about methane gas. But there is good news - methane is much more short-lived than CO2 in the atmosphere, making it a crucial and effective target in the climate fight. Here in DC, Extinction Rebellion is in the midst of a massive, ongoing campaign to stop Project Pipes, a $4.5 billion investment in decades more of toxic methane infrastructure.

Why NVDA?
Traditional methods of demanding change such as voting and lobbying have not worked. Entrenched fossil fuel interests, like Project Pipes' parent company Washington Gas, will happily let the world burn for their profit. This is why we turn to Non-Violent Direct Action: We must use our collective power to stop business as usual and create a better future for all!
