After a big win last summer, the DC Public Service Commission (PSC) is once again considering Washington Gas’ latest proposal to saddle residents with the cost of unnecessarily replacing its gas pipelines. We’re keeping the pressure on to let them know that the District is watching. We will rally in front of the PSC’s office to collect and deliver written messages to demand that the PSC reject Washington Gas's expensive and dangerous District UNsafe plan. This plan would lock us into paying $12 billion for decades of fracked methane gas pipelines, all to generate higher profits for Washington Gas. The people say NO to Washington Gas and its "accelerated pipeline replacement" profit schemes.

Join Extinction Rebellion DC (XRDC) for a nonviolent direct action (NVDA) training and subsequent action.

Get trained up to join a movement of people who are stepping up to Resist the Fossil Fuel Billionaire Takeover! All over the country, thousands of activists, both new and experienced, are gathering to level up our skills and make a plan to confront fossil fuels, billionaires, and their takeover of our government. This training is intended for anyone who wants to engage in actions that effectively meet this political moment.

Traditional methods of demanding change, such as voting and lobbying, have not worked. This is why we turn to NVDA: We must use our collective power to stop business as usual and create a better future for all! Together we will confront the climate crisis and the worsening shift towards authoritarianism.

This will be a 4-hour, in-person training, starting promptly at 1pm. The training will be held at MLK Library, with the specific room location provided to those who register. An optional free vegan lunch (with gluten-free options) will be provided starting at 12pm. If you are not joining us for lunch, please be sure to arrive a few minutes before 1pm so that we can start on time.

Within a few weeks after the training, we will put our skills into practice by taking action together! During the training, participants will help decide the focus, location, and time of this action.

Join us Thursday, August 14th from 8:00 to 9:00 am at the Public Service Commission (PSC) to rally against Washington Gas’s proposed double digits rate hikes!

Washington Gas is asking to increase their revenue to cover costs like aging pipeline replacement (their controversial “Project [Un]Safe” program), operational expenses, and even lobbying efforts for more fossil fuels in DC.

The PSC hearing will scrutinize whether these hikes are justified and if your money is being used fairly. Community groups like the Office of the People’s Counsel and the Sierra Club will challenge Washington Gas on the fairness, safety, and environmental impact of these increases.

This is about protecting DC residents from soaring utility bills, especially low-income families already struggling, and pushing for clean energy instead of dirty methane gas.
