Join Extinction Rebellion DC (XRDC) for a nonviolent direct action (NVDA) training and subsequent action.

Get trained up to join a movement of people who are stepping up to Resist the Fossil Fuel Billionaire Takeover! All over the country, thousands of activists, both new and experienced, are gathering to level up our skills and make a plan to confront fossil fuels, billionaires, and their takeover of our government. This training is intended for anyone who wants to engage in actions that effectively meet this political moment.

Traditional methods of demanding change, such as voting and lobbying, have not worked. This is why we turn to NVDA: We must use our collective power to stop business as usual and create a better future for all! Together we will confront the climate crisis and the worsening shift towards authoritarianism.

This will be a 4-hour, in-person training, starting promptly at 1pm. The training will be held at MLK Library, with the specific room location provided to those who register. An optional free vegan lunch (with gluten-free options) will be provided starting at 12pm. If you are not joining us for lunch, please be sure to arrive a few minutes before 1pm so that we can start on time.

Within a few weeks after the training, we will put our skills into practice by taking action together! During the training, participants will help decide the focus, location, and time of this action.

Our campaign to fight dirty methane gas in DC is at a critical junction. After a big win last summer, the DC Public Service Commission (PSC) is once again considering Washington Gas’ latest proposal to saddle residents with the cost of unnecessarily replacing its gas pipelines. We’re not fooled by Washington Gas’ scheming: this is a bold cash grab that will line the gas company’s pockets while residents pay the price.

We’re keeping the pressure on to let them know that the District is watching. We will rally in front of the PSC’s office to collect and deliver written messages to demand that the PSC reject Washington Gas's expensive and dangerous District UNsafe plan. This plan would lock us into paying $12 billion for decades of fracked methane gas pipelines, all to generate higher profits for Washington Gas. The people say NO to Washington Gas and its "accelerated pipeline replacement" profit schemes.

To ensure the message gets through, we plan to gather on the first Wednesday of each month at 8:15am.

Together with other groups, we won a long fight to get the PSC to reject Washington Gas' “Project Pipes” phase 3 plan. Now Washington Gas has re-branded it, and we'll defeat it again!

WGL rate-case hearing: rally against corruption

  • Washington DC Public Service Comission (PSC) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us Thursday, August 14th from 8:00 to 9:00 am at the Public Service Commission (PSC) to rally against Washington Gas’s proposed double digits rate hikes!

Washington Gas is asking to increase their revenue to cover costs like aging pipeline replacement (their controversial “Project [Un]Safe” program), operational expenses, and even lobbying efforts for more fossil fuels in DC.

The PSC hearing will scrutinize whether these hikes are justified and if your money is being used fairly. Community groups like the Office of the People’s Counsel and the Sierra Club will challenge Washington Gas on the fairness, safety, and environmental impact of these increases.

This is about protecting DC residents from soaring utility bills, especially low-income families already struggling, and pushing for clean energy instead of dirty methane gas.

Let’s show the PSC that DC stands united against unfair rate hikes and for a sustainable energy future!

RSVP not required but is appreciated!

Democracy by Assembly: America's Last, Best Hope

Join XRDC for a webinar about citizens’ assemblies! XR’s third demand is that governments must form citizens’ assemblies and act on their recommendations. So, what are citizens’ assemblies and how can we work toward realizing them? We will be joined by an expert on the subject, Nick Coccoma, for a presentation followed by Q&A.

Keep reading below for Nick’s framing of his presentation. And if you’d like to review background information ahead of the call, check out https://assembleamerica.org/learn/

Democracy by Assembly: America's Last, Best Hope

Join us for an urgent webinar on rebuilding America's democratic house through Citizens' Assemblies.

The house of our republic is in danger of collapse. Politicians answer to donors, not voters. Polarization has replaced problem-solving. And everyday Americans are locked out of the rooms where decisions are made.

But there's hope! Discover how Citizens' Assemblies—bringing together everyday people through democratic lottery—are successfully breaking gridlock and solving problems politicians can't. Learn how Assemble America is building a movement for Citizens' Assemblies in government and a People's Constitutional Convention by 2030.

Come learn how we can upgrade democracy and build a new house of the People through this visionary transformation. Click “Learn More” and RSVP to get the Zoom link!

Film Screening: Exposing the Unspoken

“Exposing the Unspoken: Behind the Power 4 Southern People NOT Southern Company Movement”

A Documentary by Arm in Arm & The People’s Justice Council

Film screening at Solidarity City, in front of Union Station in DC, with rally and music to start at 7:00pm

While XRDC is battling the greed of Washington Gas and its parent AltaGas, there is a multi-state battle against a bigger utility parent company - the insidious Southern Company.

Why Southern Company?

Southern Company and their affiliates (Georgia Power, Alabama Power, and Mississippi Power) have been bad actors in the South for a long time. The second-largest utility company in the US, they have spent money on legislation and legislators that are anti-abortion, anti-voting, anti-climate, and anti-democracy. They pollute our groundwater and our air and destroy our communities. To learn more about Southern Company, their predatory practices, and environmental offenses, download the resources on this Linktree.

8:00-10:00 Overflow: A Night of Connection & Care (original title: Organizer Mixer)

Come early for political education on Global South debt. Stay for the middle for informal conversations, music and other cultural programming. Then finish the evening with a grounding activity to help us re-fill for our days ahead.

In a world that constantly pulls at our energy, Overflow invites us into sacred pause—a space where we can pour into one another, reflect, and refill. This is more than a mixer; it’s a gathering of hearts and minds across movement spaces, a moment to breathe life back into our collective purpose.

Come as you are. Share space with fellow organizers, healers, artists, and change-makers. Through conversation, intention, and joy, we’ll reconnect to what fuels us—and to each other. Let this be a night where we remember that we are not alone in the work, and that care is not a luxury, but a strategy.
