2018-2022: What We Knew, What We’ve Learned

We knew the system was fucked. The boat is sinking and the captain lies.

We knew the climate crisis was going to destroy all we hold dear in our lives.

We knew we cannot wait for someone else to expose, challenge, and overcome the status quo.

We learned the unstoppable power of direct action and solidarity.

We learned patriarchy, racism, and colonialism are at the root of the climate crisis.

We learned only focused and repeated disruptions of business as usual will bring change at the scale needed.

We learned the haters will hate; the deniers will deny.

We learned we don’t need a pink boat to block a road. But a blockading pink boat is freaking cool, isn’t it?

We learned we need to start unfucking the system from the bottom up.

Our leaders are failing us. Their abdication of leadership is criminal. They are leading us towards societal collapse. Millions, possibly billions of people will die from the climate and ecological crisis. An atlas of human suffering awaits.

Those in power are neither willing, nor capable of acting on the climate and ecological crisis. They lack the courage, conviction and creativity to do what is required.

We will not be bystanders. Our Declaration of Rebellion said: “We refuse to bequeath a dying planet to future generations.”

Our Three-Year Vision

  • Grow the rebellion towards 3.5% of the population, understanding the need for a spectrum of resistance.

Although we’d love to, we can’t wait for everyone in the US to realize the severity and immediacy of the climate crisis and the profound change needed to turn this crisis around. By then, it will be too late. Irreversible and catastrophic tipping points will occur, triggering societal collapse and unprecedented suffering.

So we need to act decisively now, before it is too late. Research shows that 3.5% of the population participating in ongoing protest results in systems change. So that’s what we’re aiming for: 3.5% of the population engaged in open rebellion against the ruling systems of destruction and oppression.

We will not get there overnight. We will not get there with a few successful direct actions. We will get there with a series of sustained, escalated campaigns; working with others, building the number of people ready to resist and increasing pressure on the system. And we’re in luck. Millions of people in the United States say they are willing to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience to combat the climate crisis. So we know our goal is winnable.

Our first campaign starts right here, right now and is going to free us from our methane gas addiction in DC.

We’re demanding that the city council kick fossil fuel filth out of the district. We want them to shut down Washington Gas’s plans to replace the city’s methane gas infrastructure, which would set us further along the path to climate hell, mass extinction, and societal collapse.

Making the continuation of gas non-viable in DC by ratcheting up the public and economic pressure on companies like Washington Gas and on our political system is an achievable medium-term objective for the climate movement. Winning here will set us on the path to the mass mobilization we urgently need.
